5-20 Beach ridge sequence - Narrawong

This information has been developed from the publications:
  • An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Locality:

7221-594647. Surrey River to the coast. Three kilometres east of Allestree.

Access:

Princes Highway.

Geology/Geomorphology:

A sequence of parallel dune ridges and swales occurs south of the Surrey River, the ridged becoming younger toward the coast. The older, inner ridges are broader and more consolidated than the lower ridges and have clearly defined former drainage channels in the swales that separate them.

Significance:

Regional. This sector displays clearly the sequence of dune ridge formation that is the major component of the coastal landscape between Portland and the mouth of the Fitzroy River.

Management:

Extensive sub-division or other construction development would obscure the ridge and swale pattern and should be prohibited. Continuation of present rural land use practices would allow the significance of the site to be retained.
