Locality: | 7221-518511. Four kilometres south of Portland. |
Access: | Minor road off Cape Nelson Road. |
Geology: | This quarry provides clear exposures of cross-bedded dune calcarenites and pink, red and yellow-grey fossil soil horizons of the Bridgewater Formation. In places the fossils have infilled hollows in the dune calcarenite. The Bridgewater Formation is overlain by approximately 1 m of grey/white siliceous sand (Malanganee Sand). |
Significance: | State. This site is one of the best exposures of the Bridgewater Formation in the study area. Of particular interest are the soil pipes and the well-preserved fossil soil horizons contains in the sands, which are of major significance for correlative studies of phases of Pleistocene dune formation in Victoria. At the base of the north-eastern quarry face is a layer of bedded but unconsolidated sand which is not typical of the Bridgewater Formation. |
Management: | It is recommended that the north-eastern and southern quarry faces should be retained as clear exposures and should not be obscured by backfill or dumping of overburden material. |
