3-9 Cretaceous outcrop near Tahara West

This information has been developed from the publications:
  • An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Locality:

7222-549206. Four kilometres south-south-west of Tahara West.

Access:

Kiama Road off Grassdale-Merino Road.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Lower Cretaceous sandstone and mudstone (Otway Group) are exposed in a restricted outcrop approximately 100 m from Kiakite Creek. A small spring has its outlet in the bedding plane between the sandstone and mudstone layers.

Significance:

Regional. Outcrops of Cretaceous rocks are very limited as these sediments are generally deeply weathered. This exposure is one of the few available in the Portland Shire.

Management:

The interest in the site is dependent on retaining the outcrop and the spring that issues from this. Hence any land use that would obscure either of these features should be prohibited.
