Locality: | 7122-287012. One kilometre north-east of the Winnap Railway Station. |
Access: | Road to Winnap Railway Station, off Princes Highway. |
Geology/Geomorphology:
| The lower beds of the Whalers Bluff Formation are exposed on the southern bank of the Crawford River. Basalt pebbles, supposedly representing a basal conglomerate of the Whalers Bluff Formation, were reported from this locality. However, the pebbles are limited in exposure and it is difficult to locate the conglomerate in the field. The bluffs and cut-off meanders on the south-side of the river exhibit some interesting karst features. Soak water enters the Crawford River underneath limestone bluffs and outcrops. These outcrops show solution pools with rimstone barriers and a case hardened limestone surface. |
Significance: | Regional. Of major importance are the basalt pebbles, as some doubt surrounds their origin. They may represent a conglomerate bed or a thin flow of basalt at the base of the Whalers Bluff Formation. The latter is the interpretation applied to similar material in the Glenelg River near Jones Bridge. |
Management: | This site would be destroyed by flooding of the Crawford River by dam construction. |
