1-17 Cave Ridge Cave

This information has been developed from the publications:
  • An assessment of the Geological/Geomorphological Significance of Private Land in the Shire of Portland (1981) by N. Rosengren, J Mallen, T Shepherd.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Locality:

7122-050090. 12 kilometres west of Mumbannar on north side of Princes Highway.

Access:

Princes Highway.

Geology/Geomorphology:

This cave is developed in Bridgewater Formation dune limestone and has at least 15 solution hole entrances in an exposed limestone pavement. A chamber is found beneath most of these entrances. Extensive low passages display calcite speleotherms. Other caves have been recorded nearby but have not been investigated in detail.

Significance:

National. Only one other cave with a large number of solution hole entrances from a pavement is known in Australia (in Western Australia).

Management:

The entrance should be fenced to prevent stock falling into the cave. The fenced area should include other solution holes nearby which are presently covered. A rubbish removal programme undertaken by the Victorian Speleological Association in co-operation with the owner has cleared a considerable amount of dumped refuse. Further investigation of nearby caves should continue and rubbish removed where necessary.
