Site: GL72 | Land Unit: Branxholme Basalt |
Aust. Soil Class.: Bleached-Mottled, ?, Brown CHROMOSOL(confidence level 4) |
General Land Unit Description: This land unit occurs on the gently undulating basalt plains around Branxholme. The dominant soil type is a Brown Chromosol commonly with a ferric horizon above the clay subsoil. There are also isolated pockets of red soils high in free iron (e.g. GL73) in this land unit, which also occur on some of the other basalt land units. These soils have potential for more varied land use due to favourable physical and chemical properties. Due to restrictions of scale, it is difficult to separate the pockets of red soils as they typically occur in conjunction with Ferric Brown Chromosols, which are perceived as being dominant. The Ferric Chromosols have more restrictions for land use, due in part to a ferric horizon above the clay, and a subsoil that has impeded drainage. |
