This land unit is mainly composed of plains and rises with a Tertiary capping. The most distinguishing feature of this soil is a thin petroferric pan. In some soils there is a layer of ferruginous nodules above the clay, while in other soils there may be a very thick highly cemented petroferric pan. The soil is developed over a highly weathered mottled zone. This mottled zone, when reticulate or laminar, is sometimes referred to as ‘tiger mottles’ and is thought to be the result of differential hydrolisation and reduction that occurred since the Tertiary period.
