Ararat Rural City - Land Capability Pilot Project

The Ararat Rural City covers a diverse range of landscapes and associated soil types of the Western Uplands and Western Plains geomorphological divisions. The Ararat Rural City Land Capability Pilot Project has developed from the partnership of the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority (GHCMA) (external link), the Ararat Rural City Council (external link) and Department of Primary Industries to formulate and apply a modified methodology of land resource assessment (LRA). Here new technologies and alternative approaches to traditional land and soil survey have been used to develop appropriate information to support local government planning and assist in identification of proposed development requirements.

The integration of Digital Elevation Models (DEM), remote sensing techniques and GIS extrapolation techniques had delivered land capability, land hazard and soil property mapping to be used by the GHCMA, Ararat Rural City and landholder groups. There are three reports that have been prepared including:
