Bald Hill (Tatyoon)

This information has been obtained from the report: Eruption Points of the Newer Volcanic Province of Victoria by Neville Rosengren. This report was published in 1994 and was prepared for the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and the Geological Society of Australia (Victorian Division). The review of eruption points was based on an earlier unpublished manuscript Catalogue of the post-Miocene volcanoes of Victoria compiled by O P Singleton and E B Joyce (Geology Department, University of Melbourne 1970).

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and value. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external link) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:37 33 30S 142 57 00E (external link); 7422-1-1 (Bolac North) 716405. 20 km NNE of Lake Bolac. Delacombe Way.

Ararat.

Land Tenure/Use:

Private land. Bare, grazing, drained swamp, no public access.

Type 5:

Scoria cone with crater.

Bald Hill is an asymmetric scoria cone with a high, broad irregular rim enclosing a crater 400 m across and approximately 10 m deep. The crater rim is lowest towards the southeast. A small scoria pit has been worked on the southern crest of the rim. The crater contains a drained swamp but the depth of sedimentary fill is unknown.

339 m; 45 m.

Regional:

This is a very good example of a scoria cone with a well defined and enclosed crater in a region where there is a little crater development.

Class 2:

The present rural land use is compatible with maintaining the site. Future quarrying should be restricted to the lower outer slopes rather than the rim or inner slopes of the crater.
