Status:

Native to all Australian States.

Plant Description:

Shrub to 1 m high and 2 m wide, with silver-grey lance-shaped to oblong leaves, up to 10 cm long with a blunt apex and a short stalk.

Plants are dioecious (separate male and female plants). Female flowers in axillary clusters (arising from the axils or junctions between stem and leaf). Males in large globular clusters on a long thick spike or spicate panicle. Fruiting bracts are fused below the middle, 8-15 mm long, are sometimes swollen at the base and become woody at maturity.

Habitat:

Found in sheltered parts of coastal marshes from the west of the State to west Gippsland. Has high salt tolerance. Coast Saltbush has moderate waterlogging tolerance.

Comments:

Male and females plants often grow in parallel rows with the males closer to the sea.
