The Black Box flats landscape unit which occurs over only a small proportion of the survey area occupies narrow valley floors south and south west of Murtoa and a broad shallow valley east and south east of Murtoa. Black Box is the characteristic tree species of the landscape unit and although it occurs singly it occurs typically in fairly dense stands. The landform is flat.
The characteristic soil types are Murtoa clay and Horsham clay, occuping approximately equal total areas of the valley floors.
