Plant Description:

Annual or perennial herbs to subshrubs, often bristly to cottony hairy. Leaves alternate, numerous, flat to folded or occasionally circular, variously lobed or not.


Flower-heads terminal on branches. Ray florets (daisy ‘petals’) are female and purple, mauve, pale blue, pink or white. Disc florets (daisy ‘eye’) are bisexual and appear yellow overall. Fruit is an achene with opposing faces separated by a ridge and often ribbed. Pappus of numerous free bristles.

Habitat:

Widespread throughout Victoria in a range of habitats from coastal to Mallee vegetation. Usually indicative of freshwater environments but may grow on the fringes of salt lakes and swamps.

Comments:

There are at least 12 species of New Holland Daisy listed for Victoria, plus a number of varieties. Some are difficult to distinguish.
