Other Common Names:

Shining Dogwood

Status:

Native to South Australia and Victoria and rare in Western Australia and Tasmania.

Plant Description:

A compact but much branched shrub to 2 m tall with
ovate to elliptic leaves, 15-50 mm long and 10-25 mm wide. The leaves are rather thick, the under surface and leaf margins are covered by fine white star-like hairs and scattered rusty hairs while the upper surface is hairless and shining green. Younger stems and branches are also hairy and rust coloured.

Flower-heads consist of several globular clusters of flowers on short stalks. Flowers have greenish-brown sepals (petal-like bracts) to 2.5 mm long but no actual petals. The fruit is a dry capsule about 3 mm long with three valves.

Habitat:

Coastal dunes, cliffs, and estuary shorelines along most of the Victorian coastline.

Comments:

This species was once regarded as part of the coastal, Bassian Dogwood (
Pomaderris oraria subsp. oraria) from which it is distinguished by its hairless upper leaf surface.
