Intermittent Swamps

Landform and Distribution

These land features are generally topographically well defined but may be intermittent in terms of water status, depending on rainfall and evaporation as well as being modified by drainage for agricultural purposes. In this region swamps occupy depressions between north-south trending rises and low hills (i.e. ridges) and are therefore usually linearly aligned.

Native Vegetation

River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis).

Soil Types

Grey Vertosols (Great Soil Group is grey clay) or Aquic Vertosols (i.e. subject to saturation for at least 2-3 months per year). They have sodic subsoils with carbonate accumulations at depth. Surface soils are well structured clays which are usually rich in organic matter.
