Soils of Ararat Vineyards District

The report: 'Soils of the Vineyards of the Ararat District' was prepared by Nabil Badawy of the former Department of Agriculture in 1982. This soil survey was commissioned with the aim of describing and mapping the distribution of the various soil types used for growing grapevines in the former Shires of Stawell and Ararat. Field survey was carried out during 1980.

The report summarises the soil data and other relevant information obtained for the vineyards surveyed in two areas south and west of Ararat. It was envisaged that the data included in this report would be used as the basis for initiating future soil-water-plant studies in order to maximise grape production in western Victoria.

Note that soils in this report are described in terms of the earlier Northcote Factual Key classification. Today, the Australian Soil Classification is the standard for classifying Australian soils.
