Site Description | The site includes sediments, abandoned channels and terraces of the valley of the Werribee River. Immediately south of the Malty By-Pass bridge, the river channel is bordered on the west by a narrow floodplain with flood chute scars, while behind this is an older terrace 2 to 4 m higher. To the west of the channel are cliffs in alluvium of the Werribee delta.
Opposite Werribee Park Mansion, the modern floodplain is wider and includes an abandoned meander of the river.
Significance | Local. The site illustrates stages in the development of the alluvial features of the lower Werribee River.
Management | Class 3. Although modified by the establishment of a zoological park, the main landform characteristics of the site are still evident. In future developments at the park, it would be preferable to avoid grading or building on the changes of slope at the edge of the terrace and floodplain. |
