Sb12 Jacksons Creek - Ordovician and Newer Volcanics

This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

LocationSunbury - 005344. Shire of Bulla. Valley of Jacksons Creek 1.5 km northeast of Diggers Rest.

Sb12 - Ordovician sediments (S) and Newer Volcanic basalt (V), Jacksons Creek, near Bulla.

Access

Watson Road.

Ownership

Crown land.

Site Description

The site includes a meander of Jacksons Creek and a substantial exposure of Ordovician sediments overlain by Newer Volcanics. The structure of the steeply dipping Ordovician shales and sandstone and the contact between the formations is well displayed in the undercut cliff on the southern side of the channel. Black shale beds in the Ordovician sequence contain graptolite fossils. The site includes river terraces and long valley-side spurs.

Significance

Regional. The site is a very good exposure to allow detailed study of the contact between Newer Volcanics and the older rocks beneath. River cliffs, fossil localities, several types of valley slopes and depositional features make the site a considerable educational resource.

Management

Class 1. The site should be retained as Crown land. Control of weeds and rabbits is necessary. It will be advisable to provide for formal access for educational groups to the site.
