Site Description | The site includes a meander of Jacksons Creek and a substantial exposure of Ordovician sediments overlain by Newer Volcanics. The structure of the steeply dipping Ordovician shales and sandstone and the contact between the formations is well displayed in the undercut cliff on the southern side of the channel. Black shale beds in the Ordovician sequence contain graptolite fossils. The site includes river terraces and long valley-side spurs. | |
Significance | Regional. The site is a very good exposure to allow detailed study of the contact between Newer Volcanics and the older rocks beneath. River cliffs, fossil localities, several types of valley slopes and depositional features make the site a considerable educational resource. | |
Management | Class 1. The site should be retained as Crown land. Control of weeds and rabbits is necessary. It will be advisable to provide for formal access for educational groups to the site. |
