Site Description | The river cliffs on the north side of Hovells Creek, and a small disused quarry west of the railway line, expose sections of the crystalline Lara Limestone. This freshwater limestone was deposited over the Newer Volcanics, in lakes that formed from the damming of streams by the newly erupted lavas. The lakes have since drained and Hovells Creek has incised a valley exposing the limestone and underlying sediments.
Significance | Regional. The Lara Limestone has a limited distribution and is a major example of a post-basaltic non-marine deposit.
Management | Class 2. Filling or regrading of the valley slopes and the wall of the quarry should not be undertaken, as this would obscure the main sections available of the Lara Limestone.
