Site Description | The steep southern valley slope of the Maribyrnong River exposes sub-basaltic and intra-basaltic silicified sediments. The sedimentary beds are angular siliceous fragments set in a matrix of sub-rounded coarse to fine sands. The upper contact with the basalt is well exposed. The basalt is strongly jointed, both horizontally and vertically, and is vesicular with many vesicles infilled with zeolites. On the upper slopes, a sedimentary bed 1.5 m thick is enclosed between later lava flows. |
Significance | Regional. The site is a clear example of sub-basaltic and intra-basaltic silicified sediments. |
Management | Class 2. The site should be left free from dense tree plantings or other forms of slope stabilization that would obscure the form of the outcrops. |
