Geelong - Maude Area, Tertiary Stratigraphic Sites
This information has been developed from the publications:
|
Location | Batesford - 625785. Former Shire of Bannockburn. Quarry of Australian Portland Cement Limited, 2.5 km south of Batesford.
Access | McCanns Road. | |
Ownership | Private land.
Site Description | The quarry exposes extensive and very clear sections through the Batesford Limestone, Fyansford Formation and Newer Basalt and is the type locality of the Batesford Limestone. All are very clearly exposed in the southern face of the quarry and detailed analysis of the lithology and structures has been undertaken by several research workers.
Significance | State. The site is the major exposure of two of the formations recognised in the Tertiary transgressive - regressive sequence in the Geelong-Maude area. It is a type section, a major fossil site and shows the nature of the contact between the formations and the Newer Volcanics.
Management | Class 2. Arrangement should be made with the quarry management to retain, for permanent display, a quarry face which exposes the formations referred to above.
