This information has been developed from this publication:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. You Yangs - Residual Boulders

Access:

Drysdale Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Site Description:

Clustered around the summit of this hill is the best example of boulder tor topography in the You Yangs. The larger boulders are 6 to 8 m high, with the long axis being vertical or steeply inclined. Several are examples of perched or balanced boulders. Most are elliptical to cuboid in shape and display an number of minor weathering forms. Angular xenoliths are conspicuous and on several faces there are enlarged hollows where xenoliths have been weathered out. Sections of the largest aplite dyke in the You Yangs (10 m wide) are exposed on the lower western slopes of the hill, and boulders of diabase outcrop in the same area.

Significance:

Regional. The site is significant for the degree of boulder development. The boulders here are the largest in the You Yangs and there are excellent examples of balancing rocks and other minor landform weathering features of granitic rocks. The hill has a very distinctive appearance due to the cluster of the boulders, and differs from other ridges and hilltops in the You Yangs in this regard. Features at this site are not well represented elsewhere in the You Yangs.

Management:

Class 2. The site should be reserved from quarrying or other commercial development. Boulders should not be removed or displaced and there should be no structures permitted on the area of the site. It would be desirable to include this land in public ownership as part of the You Yangs Forest Park.
