Ya2 - Mt Wallace - Drained Lake

This information has been developed from this publication:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:Yaloak - 535198. Shire of Ballan. West of Geelong-Ballan Road, 6 km south of Fiskville.

Access:

Geelong-Ballan Road, Mount Wallace-Ballark Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Site Description:

A complex of eroded lava flows, forming an irregular plateau, separates the Parwan/Yaloak catchment from the Moorabool River East branch. Several large depressions on the lava surface formerly held lakes and swamps, although all are now artificially drained. The lake shorelines are defined by lava flow edges and have been further defined by weathering and erosion around the lake margin as water levels fluctuated.

Significance:

Regional. The site illustrates the complexity of the surface form and the hydrology of these lava surfaces.

Management:

Class 3. The site should be retained under rural land use without extensive building construction.
