Location: | 271670. Western edge of Linley Point, Mornington. | Site 75. Linley Point, Mornington. |
Access: | The Esplanade, Mornington.
Ownership/Managing Authority: | Crown land, Shire of Mornington.
Site Description: | The point is an outcrop of ferruginous Baxter Formation sandstone overlying Marina Cove Sand and Balcombe Clay. There is a very clear section of the Baxter Formation at the rear of the carpark on the northern side of the point. On the west and south, the shore is littered with large angular boulders of hard ferruginous coarse sandstone. These form an apron over a shore platform in a softer yellow sandy clay rock, and also cover a raised platform with a pebble bed. The raised platform and pebbles was a more obvious and significant feature on the northern side of the point but has been destroyed by construction of the car park.
Significance: | Regional. The site gives a clear exposure of the Baxter Formation and the weathering characteristics of that rock. It is a good site to show the derivation of a boulder shoreline from parent materials. Although partly obscured, the platforms (active and relict) on the west and south of the point are of significance.
Management Considerations: | Class 2.. No extensions to boat facilities or car parking should be undertaken. The sea wall should not be extended around the point. The site should be retained as an active coastal geomorphological site.
