This information has been developed from one or more of these publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Westernport Bay Catchment (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Environmental Significance in the Flood Plain of the Upper Yarra Valley Region (1983) by Neville Rosengren, Douglas Frood and Kim Lowe (as part of a study of Sites of Environmental Significance by the University of Melbourne for the then Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Authority).
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:

Somers – 398406. Immediately south of the car park at the end of Grossard Point Road.

McHaffie Point tuff beds
Access:Grossard Point Road.
Ownership:Crown land.
Geology:Cliffs 10 to 12 m high are cut in hard red halloysite spotted tuff beds overlain by brown weathered basalt and tuff. The lower red tuffs descend to sea level at either end of a small embayment and rise over 6 m in the centre. Edwards (1945) interpreted this dome form of the tuffs as indicating a small eruption centre in the Older Volcanics.
Significance:State. The site is an excellent exposure of the Older Volcanic tuffs as several types of fragmental beds are exposed. The indications that this may be an eruption centre of the Older Volcanics is the basis for evaluating the site as one of state significance.
Management:Class 2. Pathways, drainage outlets or any structures that would obscure or degrade the cliffs face should not be permitted. The present policy of diverting beach users to the north, by means of access tracks from the car park, should be maintained and strengthened by fencing at the cliff tops.
