Site Description

An active coastal cliff is cut in a soft, deeply weathered, strongly mottled sand and sandy clay rock. The material does not form ferruginous pebbles but fallen and slumped material is dispersed by wave action. The cliff face is dissected by narrow, closely spaced rills. In paces there are layered deposits of shells and ferruginous gravel at the cliff base, indicating long periods of accretion of material derived from adjacent coastal sectors.

Significance

Local. The cliff contrasts with harder rock cliffs at Indented Head and The Bluff. The layered shells and gravels present an interesting field interpretation problem as to source and mode of deposition.

Management Considerations

Class 2. The cliff is not an erosion hazard, is not dangerous, and erosion rates do not pose a threat to property. There should be no engineering works constructed, either as protective or stabilization measures, and beach nourishment should not be undertaken at the site. If roadworks or landscaping take place at the cliff top, care should be taken to avoid loose rubble covering the slope foot deposits of shells and gravel at the northern end of the site.
