Location: | AMG Ref: 507254. | Flood crevasse at G11(A), Cut-Off at G10 (arrow), Yarra Fault Scarp (y.....s) Colluvial/alluvial Fans at G7 |
Access: | Henley Road. | |
Geology/Geomorphology: | The western margin of the Yarra floodplain at Yering and Coldstream West is marked by a distinctive escarpment. South-west of Henley Road bridge, the escarpment is 80 metres high and is weakly incised by several small streams. There has been long debate about the origin of this scarp (Juston, 1911; Keble, 1918; Hills, 1935; Gill, 1949; Garratt, 1973), with the most recent evidence (Garratt, 1975) indicating it to be a fault.
The small streams that cross the scarp issue onto the floodplain across broad alluvial fans at the slope foot. The flood plain is a complex of meanders cross with numerous cut-offs and alluvial ridges.
The site includes a steep section of the scarp of the Yarra Fault, alluvial fan materials at the scarp foot and examples of abandoned channels and low ridges of the meander scroll plain.
Significance: | Regional. The scarp, slope deposits and meander patterns are representative of the landforms, of the western margin of the Yarra flats.
Management: | Class 3. No constraints on land use are necessary to maintain the significant features of the site. |
