Site Description: | Cropping out along the valley of Tea Tree Creek is a coarse grained, poorly sorted, rounded and imbricate conglomerate of sandstone, slate and siltstone clasts with a mean diameter of 10 to 15 cm. The conglomerate overlies Ordovician sediments and was originally interpreted as a Permian glacigene deposit. More recent work indicates it to be of Tertiary age and this site is taken to be the type locality of the Ballark Conglomerate.
Significance: | State. The deposit has long been the subject of debate concerning the origin and age of the sediments. The wide range of lithic component in the deposit compared with other Victorian Tertiary conglomerates has contributed to uncertainty about the age. This section is a very clear exposure and displays the major characteristics of the conglomerate.
Management: | Class 1. The section should not be regraded, stabilized or covered by fill. The site is partially overgrown and weed control is necessary.
