El1 - Moorabool River - Ballark Conglomerate

This information has been developed from this publication:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Location:Elaine - 455165. Shire of Ballan. Left bank of Moorabool River (East branch), 2 km north of Morrisons.

Moorabool River - Ballark Conglomerate

Access:

Ballan-Meredith Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Site Description:

Outcropping on the left bank of the Moorabool River (East branch) is a 5 m high section of a litho facies of the Ballark Conglomerate. The basal beds of the deposit here include large clasts of rounded sandstone and more angular slates, the deposit fining upwards to smaller gravels and coarse, cross-bedded sands. Other section occur along the river upstream. The valley here has not developed a floodplain and the channel undercuts the valley slope exposing the Tertiary sections. This profile contrasts strongly with the wide floodplain developed by the Moorabool in similar geological materials south of Steiglitz Plateau.

Significance:

Regional. The site is a clear example of a litho facies in the Ballard Conglomerate.

Management:

Class 2. The section should not be regraded, stabilized or covered by fill.
