This information has been developed from this publication:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage (external link) section of the Geological Society of Australia website for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography.

Moorabool River - Structures

Access:

Meredith-Steiglitz Road.

Ownership:

Crown land and private land.

Site Description:

The Moorabool is here deeply incised into Lower Ordovician sedimentary rocks. Steep valley slopes and river cliffs provide excellent exposures of bedded, folded, jointed and faulted structures in these rocks.

Significance:

Regional. The site is the best exposure of the Ordovician sediments and their structures along the Moorabool River.

Management:

Class 2. The area should be retained as Crown land without modification. Low weirs across the river would not submerge important exposures, but a high reservoir would obscure the major structural features of significance.
