Access

The site is accessible only by boat and has not been field checked for this survey.

Ownership/Managing Authority

Commonwealth Land (Department of Defence) and Crown land (Department of Conservation, Forests and Lands).

Site Description

Duck Island is a low sandy island 1.5 km north of the western peninsula of Swan Island (Point Norgate). It is an extension of the original barrier or spit system that built this peninsula and is linked by a broad tidal flat exposed at low tide. This flat is terminated north of Duck Island by the tidal channel that links Swan Bay to Port Phillip Bay.

Significance

Unknown. The site is evidence that Swan Island and adjacent tidal areas have a complex depositional history as a barrier, spit, embayment and tidal system. No detailed study has been undertaken to determine the history of this system.

Management Considerations

Class 2. The island and tidal flats should not be used as a dumping area for dredge spoil.
