Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. See the Earth Science Heritage section of the Geological Society of Australia website (external link) for details of geological heritage reports, and a bibliography. |
Location: | Barrallier - 508626. 1500 m north of Scrub Point in the North Arm Channel. | Ferruginous sandstone of the Baxter Formation at Crawfish Rock, Site 222 |
Access: |
Access is possible by boat and the rock is exposed at low tide. |
Ownership: |
Crown land. |
Geology: |
The rock is an outcrop of ferruginous Baxter Formation sandstone. It lies in the main tidal channel of the North Arm and strong and reversing current action and deep surrounding waters have prevented accumulation of sand and gravel beaches and spits. |
Significance: |
Regional. The outcrop represents a high relief feature in the now submerged drainage system of the Westernport area. |
Management: |
Class 2. The outcrop should not be removed. Navigation aid structures sited on Crawfish Rock should be designed to maintain a substantial exposure of the sandstone. |
