153. Glen Forbes - Lignite.

  • Sites of Environmental Significance in the Flood Plain of the Upper Yarra Valley Region (1983) by Neville Rosengren, Douglas Frood and Kim Lowe (as part of a study of Sites of Environmental Significance by the University of Melbourne for the then Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Authority).
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Grantville - 728428. Two hundred metres north of the road bridge at Glen Forbes.

Access:

Dalyston - Glen Forbes Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land (Public Land Water Frontage Reserve), and private land.

Geology:

At the base of the river cliff is an outcrop of lignite belonging to Unit 2 of the Baxter Formation in the Bass River area (Spencer-Jones
et al, 1975). The outcrop was first reported by James Stirling (1899).

Significance:

Regional. The outcrop is a rare surface exposure of the ligneous materials of the Baxter Formation.

Management:

Class 1. The outcrop is obscured by weeds and is subject to cattle trampling. Stock should be excluded from the area and no river bank works or bridges works should be permitted.
