150. Grantville - Tertiary Gravels

Grantville - 733465. The Shunt Off Road and Grantville Road junction.

Grantville Road and The Shunt Off Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology:

An irregular bed of Baxter Formation gravels on weathered basalt. Tickell (1971) suggested that the gravels (which include black chert, chert breccias, reef quartz and quartzites) are derived from Palaeozoic rock.

Significance:

Regional. This is one of several localities in the region where gravels derived from Palaeozoic rocks have been noted.

Management:

Class 2. Future roadworks should be designed to retain the exposure of gravels beds.
