129. Poowong East - Older Volcanics Residual

  • Sites of Environmental Significance in the Flood Plain of the Upper Yarra Valley Region (1983) by Neville Rosengren, Douglas Frood and Kim Lowe (as part of a study of Sites of Environmental Significance by the University of Melbourne for the then Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Authority).

Location:

Poowong - 979557. Six kilometres east of Poowong.

Access:

Korumburra to Drouin road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Geology:

A small capping of Older Volcanics overlies Mesozoic sandstones and mudstones. The Mesozoic rocks have been quarried and the old quarry face exposes the contact between the two formations.

Significance:

Regional. The site provides one of the best exposures in the Westernport Bay catchment of the contact between the Mesozoic bedrocks and Older volcanics.

Management:

Class 2. The guidelines relating to quarry management apply at this site.
