123. Poowong North - Childers Formation

  • Sites of Environmental Significance in the Flood Plain of the Upper Yarra Valley Region (1983) by Neville Rosengren, Douglas Frood and Kim Lowe (as part of a study of Sites of Environmental Significance by the University of Melbourne for the then Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Authority).

Location:

Poowong - 935617. Seven kilometres north of Poowong.

Access:

O'Mearas Road.

Ownership:

Private land.

Geology:

A small quarry exposes a six metre section of coarse sands and gravels with lenses and narrow vertical pipes of clay. The material is regarded as Early Tertiary and equivalent to the Childers Formation (Douglas 1979). It is older than the Older Volcanics.

Significance:

Regional. This is one of the major exposures of the Early Tertiary sub-basaltic sediments in the study area.

Management:

Class 2. The principles of quarry management apply at this site.
