107. Drouin - Older Volcanics

  • Sites of Environmental Significance in the Flood Plain of the Upper Yarra Valley Region (1983) by Neville Rosengren, Douglas Frood and Kim Lowe (as part of a study of Sites of Environmental Significance by the University of Melbourne for the then Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges Authority).
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Location:

Warragul - 020776. Railway cutting three kilometres east of Drouin.

Access:

Old Princess Highway.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology:

A deep cutting for the Gippsland Railway exposes a 15 metre vertical section of deeply weathered Older Volcanics basalt and tuff. The volcanics have decomposed to clay characterised by abrupt colour changes.

Significance:

Regional. This is one of the most extensive vertical sections available of the weathered Older Volcanics materials.

Management:

Class 3. In the event of the railway line being relocated, it would be desirable to maintain access to the cutting.
