A number of soil pit sites have been characterised on the Mitiamo mapsheet. Most of these have been selected as example profiles for major soil types in the area. It is not possible to give an estimate as to how representative these sites are of major soil types in the area. Care has been exercised in site selection to take into account local variations in geology and landform. Detailed soil mapping relating to this area - by Skene (1971) and Skene and Harford (1964) can be found elsewhere on this website.
Pine Grove area
The following soil pits were selected as example profiles for major soil types in the Pine Grove area and were described in 1995. This work was undertaken as part of a National Landcare Program (NLP) project. We wish to thank David and Greg Rankin and Neil, Sue and David Allen for organising site selection and pit excavation. A soil pit field day was held for landholders in 1995.
Pyramid Hill area
The following soil pits were selected as example profiles for major soil types in the Pyramid Hill area and were also described in 1995 - as part of a National Landcare Program (NLP) project. We wish to thank Deidre Stevens (DPI, Kerang) for organising site selection and pit excavation and Bruce and Leigh McCahon, Trevor Stevens, Neville Miller, and David and Geoff Bourke for assisting. A soil pit field day using these soil pits was held for landholders on 14th June 1995.
