Soils of the North Central Region | Detailed Soil Surveys | Soil and Landform Mapping | North Central Region Soil Pits

The North Central region has a great diversity of soil types that reflect differences in parent material, topography, climate, organic activity and age (e.g. degree of weathering). For agricultural purposes, many of these soils have some chemical and physical limitations (e.g. sodicity) which require careful management.

The most widespread soils are Sodosols. Vertosols (cracking clay soils) are common in the northern and western plains areas. Calcarosols are prevalent in the drier north western parts of the region. Dermosols are more common in the south eastern parts of the region. Many of these soils are used for cropping but can have a number of chemical and physical limitations that require careful management.
