Tarwin (Tw)
Geology
Recent to Pleistocene alluvial sediments, mostly derived from the basalts around Leongatha and the Cretaceous hills to the east of Tarwin and Buffalo.
Landform
Flood plain. This is an alluvial plain characterised by frequently active erosion and aggradation (i.e. alluvial deposition) by channelled or overbank stream flow. Frequently active means that the flow has an average recurrence interval of 50 years or less.
Soils
Most of the surface soils are dark grey light to medium clays which tend to crack on drying. These grade into grey or brownish grey medium clays with fine brown mottling. Grey mottled clays continue to at least 1 m. Soil Pit Site SG4 is an example of this type of soil.
