Surface Soil

A10 – 35 cmVery dark greyish brown (10YR3/2); clay loam; moderate granular structure (less than 5 mm); very weak consistence moist; gradual and smooth transition to:

B2135 - 80 cmVery dark greyish brown (10YR3/2); light clay; moderate coarse polyhedral structure; very weak consistence moist; gradual and smooth transition to:
B2280 – 130 cmDark greyish brown (10YR4/2); light clay; weak coarse polyhedral structure; weak consistence moist; diffuse and smooth transition to:
B23130 – 170 cmDark greyish brown (10YR4/2); light clay; weak coarse polyhedral structure; weak consistence moist.

Key Profile Features:

  • Lack of strong texture contrast between surface (A) horizon and subsoil (B) horizons
Other Notes:
  • This profile is much deeper than is typical for the Balook clay loam soil type.
  • Pit excavated to 2 metres depth - no impeding layers apparent.
  • The soil profile also has a weak consistence when moist. This should present few limitations for root development.
