32. Merriman Creek - Callignee South

Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:665510 to 690534. Merriman Creek south of Callignee South.

Blackwarry North Road, Youngs Road.

Ownership:

Crown Land.

Geology/Geomorphology:

Mesozoic arkose and mudstone outcrop along Merriman Creek north of Sassafras Creek. The outcrops include some relatively unweathered sections of blue-grey to black mudstone with abundant plant remains, including
Taeiopteris daintreii (see also Site 8221 – 30).

Significance:

State. The outcrops are some of the best exposures of Mesozoic rocks in the South Gippsland region. Extensive horizontal and vertical sections may be traced along Merriman Creek and many are relatively unweathered.

Management:

Reservoir construction or other major disturbance that would obscure the outcrops above Sassafras Creek should be prohibited.
