Centred on the major rural township, the large Horsham Salinity Province mainly covers the floodplain of the Wimmera river. Significant wetlands have developed along the Wimmera River in areas subject to flooding, which in wet years play a role in keeping watertables shallow by allowing surface water time to recharge the shallow aquifer system.
Salt affected land has mainly been mapped along drainage lines and natural evaporation basins, some of which are identified as Salinas, along the Wimmera River floodplain. Salinity occurrences are associated with the local scale Groundwater Flow Systems (GFSs) in aeolian sediments and with the intermediate scale GFS in the alluvial plains. Dryland cropping is the dominate landuse with grazing on annual pasture and stubble.
Management should seek to improve perennial plants in grazing areas and provide protection and native revegetation of saline areas.
