This information has been developed from the publications:

  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Western Region of Melbourne (1986) by Neville Rosengren
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance on the Coast of Port Phillip Bay (1988) by Neville Rosengren.
  • Sites of Geological and Geomorphological Significance in the Shire of Otway (1984) by Neville Rosengren.
Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Ko2 - Springs at base of basalt, Deep Creek, Mickleham.

Access

Private drive from Mickleham Road.

Ownership

Private land
Site DescriptionSeveral springs emerge at the base of the Newer Volcanics basalt where it overlies Silurian sediments. The springs emerge at the same contour level and have given rise to gullies and slumps on the slopes below.

Slumping at a similar level on adjacent slopes was probably initiated by springs now inactive.

Significance

Local. The site is a clear active example of a process important in developing and shaping valley-side slopes on Deep Creek in the study area.

Management

Any activity that altered or required the alteration of the hydrology, sub-surface drainage or form of the slopes of the site should not be permitted. The site does not pose a hazard to current land use.
