Soil Survey of Part of Shepparton Irrigation District, Victoria

The soil survey has been carried out by J K M Skene and J R Freedman of the former Department of Agriculture with the collaboration of the former State Rivers and Water Supply Commission, in June 1944.

The Shepparton Irrigation District adjoins the town of Shepparton
in the former Parish of Shepparton, County of Moira, Victoria. This detailed classification of the soils of the area was carried out primarily to investigate more fully the relation between fruit tree losses and soil type. At the same time, attention was given to other factors involved in the loss of trees, such as local topographical features, irrigation methods, drainage facilities, soil salinity, and the occurrence of subsoil water. In addition to the horticultural areas, large areas devoted to pasture and vegetables were included in the survey.
