Geological heritage sites, including sites of geomorphological interest and volcanic heritage sites, are under regular revision by the Geological Society of Australia, especially in the assessment of significance and values. Reference should be made to the most recent reports. Location:

786044. 7 kilometres east of Mt Tambo.

Abstract:

Road cutting exposing the marine part of the Enano Group, overlying the Thorkidaan Volcanics.

Access:

Road to Wilga Prospect.

Ownership:

Crown land.

Geology:

At this locality the upper ignimbritic rhyolites of the Thorkidaan Volcanics are overlain by volcanogenic sediment with pebble-ringed volcanic fragments. This material is in turn overlain by quartz-rich siltstone of the Gibsons Folly Formation, which in its lower part still contains the same pebble-sized volcanic fragments. This section provides clear evidence that the marine part of the Silurian sequence overlies the Thorkidaan Volcanics.

Significance:

Regional. This is the only site documented where the relationship between the Enano Group and the Thorkidaan volcanics well displayed.

Management:

The significance of this site would be enhanced by the maintenance of clear sections in the road cutting.
