Very dark greyish brown (10YR3/2); sandy clay loam; weak medium to fine subangular blocky structure; rough ped-fabric; weak consistence when dry; many fine to very fine roots; pH 7.0; smooth and sharp boundary to:

A2

8–15

Very dark greyish brown (10YR3/2); sporadically bleached (7.5YR5/3 dry); heavy sandy clay loam; massive structure; earthy ped fabric; strong consistence when dry; fine roots common; many fine and medium pores; pH 6.5; wavy and sharp boundary to:

B21

15–45

Reddish brown (5YR4/4); medium heavy clay; strong very coarse to coarse prismatic, parting to medium to coarse angular blocky structure; smooth ped fabric; very firm consistence when dry; very few (<2 mm) mangans; common distinct slickenside cutans; fine roots common; pH 8.5; wavy and clear boundary to:

B22k

45–80

Yellowish red (5YR4/6); light medium clay; moderate medium prismatic, parting to medium to fine polyhedral structure; smooth ped fabric; very firm consistence when moderately moist; many soft calcareous segregations (6–60 mm); moderately calcareous; few fine roots; pH 9.5; wavy distinct boundary to:

B3

80–105

Yellowish red (5YR5/6) with very few medium to coarse (2.5YR4/6, 5YR4/4) distinct mottles; medium clay (sandy); weak coarse polyhedral structure; rough ped fabric; firm consistence when moderately moist; very few calcareous nodules (<2 mm); moderately calcareous; very few fine roots; pH 9.5; smooth clear boundary to:

D

105–135

Reddish yellowish (7.5YR6/6) with few fine faint red mottles; medium clay; massive structure; earthy fabric; firm consistence when moderately moist; few medium soft calcareous segregations and other coarse tubules; very highly calcareous; pH 9.5.
Management considerations
  • Moderate susceptibility to wind erosion
  • Clay subsoil tends to be subplastic
  • Alkaline subsoils with calcareous nodules and soft segregations
  • Subsoil constraint >80 cm as mottling indicating imperfect drainage
  • Possible plough pan (8-15 cm)
  • Weakly structured surface, vulnerable to wind erosion without stubble and trash retention
  • Rooting depth observed to 105 cm
  • Moderate susceptibility to soil structure decline due to slaking and some dispersion
