Description

1A1

0–10

Disturbed horizon.

1A2

10–30

Greyish brown (2.5Y5/2); sand (organic); weak to massive (structureless);; weak consistence when dry; pH 5.7.

1A2

30–75

Light yellowish brown (2.5Y6/3) with few faint orange and brown mottles; sand; conspicuously bleached; massive (structureless); weak consistence when dry; pH 5.2.

1Bs

75–90

Brownish yellow (10YR6/6) with common distinct orange mottles; sand; ferruginous and indurated sandstone are abundant; pH 5.5.

1B2

90–130

Brownish yellow (10YR6/6) with many prominent coarse red and orange mottles; light medium clay; strong fine to very fine polyhedral structure; clay skins on the ped-faces; pH 5.5.

1B3

130+

Partially weathered sandstone and clay; abundant very coarse red prominent mottles; clay skins on the clay-ped faces; horizon grading towards BC.
Management considerations
  • Strong texture contrast between topsoil and subsoil
  • Deep sandy acidic surface and subsurface soil
  • Hydrophobic surface soil
  • Bleached A2 horizon with little nutrient
  • Acidic, mottled subsoil, limited nutrient availability
  • Ferric ‘ironstone’ pan above subsoil, possible Podosol
  • Weathered sandstone occurring at depth
  • Gently undulating plain, poor to imperfect site drainage
