Permanent Waterbodies

Landscape
Throughout the region there are four main types of waterbodies identified under the land systems categories. Intermittent swamps include naturally intermittent waterbodies and those drained since European Settlement, while others occur as chains of swamps and permanent water bodies (swamp and lake complexes). The permanent waterbodies unit identifies the permanent waterbodies in the area. Many of these lakes are designated public land, although there are some privately owned lakes. Many of the lakes have lunettes on their eastern side.

Soil descriptions and suitability ratings have not been completed for this unit because many of these lakes recede in summer with some drying out completely during exceptionally dry summers. However, they cannot be used effectively for grazing or cropping compared with the intermittent swamps. These lake beds have limited throughflow to the watertable resulting in permanent waterbodies.
