The Victoria Valley Salinity Province is an upland valley within the Grampians Ranges. Its geology is dominated by a granitic pluton, which drains via local to Intermediate scale Groundwater Flow Systems (GFSs), into colluvial material and the surrounding sandstone. Salinity is expressed mainly at the borders of the colluvial material and ‘break-of-slope’ occurrences along creek lines.
Little attempt has been made to mitigate the discharge zones although some zones do correspond to the location of blue gum plantations. Salinity monitoring and mapping has been ongoing within the valley since the 1980s and represents a significant data set of value to salinity process research. Research is currently occurring to access the effectiveness of tree plantations in reducing rainfall runoff and recharge.
